Treat Your Tresses The dog days of summer often mean a lot of Bad Hair days due to the constant abuse of sun exposure, chlorine, salt water, pollution and dry, air-conditioned environments. Daily shampooing and styling routines strip the natural oils away from the hair shaft and scalp, leaving hair dry, frizzy, out of control and starving for moisture. A change in the way you care for your hair will result in healthy, more glorious tresses.
- Wash your hair as little as possible to maintain the natural oils that protect your hair and scalp from dryness.
- Replace lathering up with rinsing. Rinse hair immediately after swimming and exercising or if it is mussed up from sleep. Rinse thoroughly as you would when you shampoo, just skip the shampooing part. Too many people wash their hair even if it isn’t necessary.
- Read ingredient labels. Avoid shampoo with Sodium Laurel Sulfate and opt for shampoo that rely on milder lathering agents such as Decyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Castile Soap which are less irritating and drying, especially on chemically treated hair.
- Try only styling your hair with heat devices every other day. Go for a more carefree summer look and take advantage of decorative clips or pull back your hair with a head band, combs or even pomade.
Commercially prepared conditioners are fine most of the time to detangle, but often they can build up on your hair leaving a dull, lifeless appearance. Simple, natural remedies can encourage shine and body as well as control other conditions such as an itchy scalp and dandruff which are exacerbated by chemicals used in commercial conditioners.
Try an herbal vinegar rinse which is ideal for itchy scalp and useful for controlling dandruff.
