Lighter Legs Long, hot days can leave your legs feeling tired and heavy. Extreme temperatures and humidity are even harder to tolerate if you suffer from edema (lower leg swelling) and/or varicose veins.
Varicose veins result when one or more valves in the venous system of the leg fails to function properly and leaks. Some blood will then flow back down into the leg (in the wrong direction) and pools in the superficial veins under the skin. Over time, additional pressure causes the veins to stretch, bulge and become visible. This is when tiny capillary branches of the veins overflow to produce spider veins and purple discoloration.
Although there is no cure for varicose veins outside of surgery, taking some minor precautions can significantly decrease the formation of future veins.
- Elevate your feet whenever possible.
- Avoid sitting cross legged.
- High-heeled shoes place unnecessary stress on leg veins by forcing your calf muscles to stay contacted for extended periods.
- Improve circulation with physical activity such a walking, biking, swimming and yoga to reposition the body and get blood flowing in the opposite direction.
- If you stand or sit in one position for an extended period of time, make a conscious effort to change positions or move around every 20 minutes. Even a brief walk can help your blood flow freer.
- Hormones found in oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy after menopause encourages the development of varicose and spider veins.
- Being overweight aggravates the problem further due to added strain and pressure on the legs.
- Smoking can also create circulation problems and should be avoided.
- Avoid excessive intake of caffeine, soft drinks, alcohol and fatty foods.
